Shared note: From "The Examiner", Frederick, Maryland, Friday, February 15, 1861: "Manslaughter - a fracas occurr… From "The Examiner", Frederick, Maryland, Friday, February 15, 1861: "Manslaughter - a fracas occurred between two negroes at Knoxville [Maryland; near Harper's Ferry], on the 5th instant, in which a white man, named Hanson Poole, interfered for the purpose of parting them. After doing so, one of the negroes, named Goings, became insolvent to Mr. Poole, who resented it; when Goings threw a heavy stone and struck him behind the ear, crushing his skull. Poole was taken up senseless and carried home, where he died on last Friday night of the wound. Goings is in jail and will be tried at the present term of the Court; in consequence of which we forbear to give the rumors in circulation, which are too conflicting as to the degree of the crime committed, to be relied on." |
