From E. E. Barnes letter: "...I have come to believe [he] was left as an orphan when he lost both his parents just before, during, or just after coming across from Germany by boat...One old verbal reference which I have indicated that his parents died on boat from Yellow Fever, but this is in question. He was one of two or three children. His sister was Mary and she is buried near him. Brother's name, if he existed, is unknown and a mystery...Thomas worked as a machinist or foundry molder at Pompels Foundry on West South Street."
