Mrs. Carrie M. Williams, widow of Dr. J. Merrill Williams, passed away at the home of her niece, Mrs. Lynn Mitchell of McAlevys Fort, on Saturday, Jan. 16, 1960. at 10 a.m. She had been ill for the past 10 months. The deceased, a former resident of Roaring Spring, was born at Otelia, near Shirleysburg, Huntingdon County, on Jan. 23, 1880, a daughter of Francis and Mary (Rorer) Withington. She was united in marriage on June 15, 1916 to Dr. J. Merrill Williams, the ceremony being performed at Petersburg by Dr. Emory Stevens. Dr. Williams, a Methodist minister, preceded his wife in death on Feb. 5, 1954. She was a member of the Trinity Methodist Church at Roaring Spring. She also belonged to the WSCS and the Loyalty Bible Class of the church. For many years she supported a Japanese child through the Christian Children's Fund. Dr. and Mrs. Williams served parishes at Camp Hill, Lock Haven and York and then he was appointed superintendent of the Williamsport District of the Methodist Conference in 1940. Later they were sent to Trinity Church in Harrisburg where they served until they retired in 1950. Mrs. Williams was active and helpful to her jusband in all church and civic affairs in the communities in which they served. She taught a primary class in Sunday School in the various communities in which they were stationed. She is survived by one sister, Mrs. T. Roy Morton of Petersburg R.D. A number of nieces and nephews also survive. Three sisters preceded her in death. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, Jan. 19, at the Petersburg Methodist Church. The Rev. Robert Croyle, Altoona District superintendent, will officiate, assisted by the Rev. Edmund W. Minnich and the Rev. Carl Williams. Interment will be made in Cedar Grove Cemetery, Petersburg. Friends are being received at Spyker's funeral home at Petersburg until 11 a.m. Tuesday when the body will be taken to the church where it will lie in state until the hour for the service. |
